St. Francis of Assisi is the founder of the Franciscan Order. He is the Patron Saint of Santa Fe, NM as well as The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, Animals and the Environment.

He was born the son of a wealthy merchant Francis led a privileged life. However, Francis wanted more than wealth. He wanted to be a noble and a knight. Finally, a call for knights for the Fourth Crusade gave him a chance for his dreams. But Francis did not get any further than a day’s ride from Assisi. There he had a dream in which God told him he had it all wrong and he should return home. His search for conversion led him to an ancient church at San Damiano. While he was praying he heard Christ on the Crucifix speak to him. “Francis, repair my church”. This eventually led to Francis preaching although he was not a priest. Slowly companions began to follow; ten years later the brotherhood (Franciscans) had grown to five thousand. Years of poverty and wandering made Francis ill. He died from dropsy (edema) on October 4,1226 at forty five years old.
